Thomas Jefferson's European Wine Tours

Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, began his education of European wines in 1762-67 while living with and studying law under the tutelage of his mentor and teacher, George Wythe. He began creating his own personal wine cellar soon after completing his studies with him. But, his real wine education took place when he succeeded Benjamin Franklin as U.S. Minister to France in 1785. He lived in Paris for 5 years and during that time took two tours of the surrounding wine country. From Bordeaux to the Rhine, Jefferson made extensive notes during this travels, documenting French viticulture and winemaking practices.

Our own Lorraine Hems will guide us through some highlights of his adventures and we’ll sample some of the wines that reflect those regions. And what more approriate venue for this event could there be than the Inn on Broadway with its classic design and traditional décor. We hope you’ll join us for a trip down a President’s memory lane.
