Summer Evening At Sweet Basil's
with Ron Bunnell of Bunnell Family Cellar

Thursday, August 20th, 2015, 6:30pm

at

Sweet Basil's School of Cooking

Edmonds, Washington

Ron's wine path to winemaker began with a master's in Plant Ecology then working as a botanist. Wanting to move on to something different, he enrolled at UC Davis to earn a degree in Vineyard Management. It was there he was given some Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Napa's Oakville AVA, and his path shifted away from the vineyard as a career focus. He went to work for Charles Krug, then Beringer, where he was their first research enologist. Next, he became a consulting winemaker, before working all around California for Kendall-Jackson. While there, he was head of their Syrah program, and he developed a passion for Rhone varietals. The position of head red winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle brought him to our state, and although he was hesitant to make the move, he took the risk and headed north. Under his direction, the wineries' red wine program doubled. Ultimately, Ron ended up working exclusively on their Col Solare program. In 2005, Ron struck out on his own with Bunnell Family Cellars, knowing Syrah and Rhone varietals were to be his focus. East of the mountains, Prosser's Vintners Village is home to their tasting room and Wine O'Clock Wine Bar, a must-stop food and wine destination in the Yakima Valley. For those of us who want to taste closer to home, their collection of wines and a selection of light appetizers can be sampled at the Woodinville Warehouse District tasting room.

Pairing Ron's fabulous wines with the fantastic culinary creations and the beautiful garden of Sweet Basil's is this year's installment of our long-time summer tradition! A relaxing stroll through the garden while sipping a glass of wine is always the best way to start the evening. And the koi pond, inviting benches, herbs and seasonal blooms, are just part of the charm of Sweet Basil's. The food is always amazing, and the wine pairings will be as well!
