Every breakthrough has its pioneers. Women trail blazers in Washington State winemaking include Kay Simon of Chinook Winery, and Joy Andersen of Snoqualmie Vineyards. Once very rare in our state’s cellars, women are now making wine all around the state for large and small producers. Some are striking out on their own to create their personal vision of what Washington wine can be. This event will introduce us to some of our emerging women winemakers, and give us a chance to sample what their perseverance and creativity brings to the glass. Appetizers will be paired with our wine selections.
Mari Womack went from the restaurant world, to volunteering in tasting rooms, to tasting room manager at Darby Winery in 2011. Dedication to learning the art of winemaking earned Mari the position of Assistant Winemaker 4 years ago. Damsel Cellars is her solo project, and she is bringing her pride and passion to it. Mari believes wine is filled with romance, ritual, and history, and she knew she wanted to be a part of that tradition.

At Red Sky Winery, Winemaker Carol Parsons and Assistant Winemaker Lisa Callan focus on creating elegant wines that compliment food. The winery is now almost completely women run. Carol took over the reins as head winemaker in 2006, seven years after she and her husband started Red Sky. Lisa received her Enology Certification from WSU, and joined Carol 2013. Consulting winemaker Erica Orr rounds out the strong female team.

Lisa Warr-King Packer founded Warr-King Wines in 2013 after spending 20 years in the high tech industry. Her path to winemaker included classes, an internship with Patterson Cellars, and a WSU Enology Certificate. Her vision: focus on the uniqueness of Washington wine – its soils, vineyards, differences in vintages. Lisa embraces those qualities in a minimalistic way to bring out the best in each of those variations, creating wines that are bold, structured, elegant examples of what our state has to offer.

Kasia Kim, Kasia Winery
Both art on the canvas and art in the bottle are Kasia’s passions. Originally from Poland, she came to the wine world via real estate, interior design, the legal field, and the tasting room at Mark Ryan Winery. Washington wines inspired her, and she began a journey to make wines that, like a painting, express a place and time. Kasia says “I knew from the start that my wines had to be refined and deeply personal to meet or exceed the high level of wineries around me”.
