Hans Peter Weis | Weis Vineyards Winemaker/Owner

Born in Zell Mosel, Germany, Winemaker Hans Peter Weis grew up in the vineyards and cellar of his family’s winery. It was there that he gained his passion for wine, continually learning and working with his family to learn the techniques and traditions of the Mosel. He furthered his experience by receiving a degree in Winemaking, Business & Agriculture at Bad Kreuznach, Germany. After university, Peter decided it was time to travel away from home and gain experience in different wine regions. This is how he ended up finding his way to the Finger Lakes region in 2006, where he spent 11 vintages working as a winemaker and vineyard manager at a prominent winery. In the Spring of 2016, Peter and his wife Ashlee, a native of the Finger Lakes, decided to begin a new adventure together and start a winery of their own: Weis Vineyards was founded. Their first harvest was in the Fall of 2016, followed by the first vintage release and tasting room opening in May 2017. Peter’s love of the Finger Lakes comes from the superb terroir it provides. With the vast array of diversity in the soil, he is able to utilize the strong minerality and slate characteristics to produce high quality Riesling, just as they do back home in the Mosel. “Our Riesling grapes are grown in locations where the slate content is high and similar to my grandfather’s vineyards back home.”
