We have had some pretty good exposure to the highly acclaimed wines of California (#1 producing state in America), and also the incredible wines of our backyard (New York is #3). But it’s time to take a good look at what is happening with number 2 and number 4! Yes, that would be Washington State and Oregon, the exciting frontier known as the Pacific Northwest. These two neighboring states lie within the higher reaches of acceptable latitude for wine-making, which gives them the duel advantage of more sunlight and more coolness. This makes for beautifully balanced wines that are extremely food friendly.
To geography lovers, the Pacific Northwest is a paradise of coastal plains mountain ranges and river valleys that translate to both maritime and continental climates. To food lovers, it is a culinary hot spot full of specialties from wild truffles to fresh caught salmon. To wine lovers, it is simply a treasure trove of goodies! Washington has earned its place as a top producer of Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet and Merlot, while Oregon has staked its claim to the Burgundian varietals of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Come join us as Holly Howell takes us on a virtual tour, and see what our other coast has to offer!
