Urban Winery Event At

Bartholomew Winery with Owner-Winemaker Bart Fawbush

Wednesday, March 15th, 2017

6:30pm at

Bartholomew Winery
Old Rainier Brewery Building

3100 Airport Way South

Seattle, Washington

The number of urban wineries in Seattle is now over 20, allowing city dwellers and visitors to sample some of the best in Washington wine without heading to Woodinville. Our March event continues our tradition of exploring those wineries, one tasting room at a time. This year, Winemaker Bart Fawbush is welcoming us to the tasting room of Bartholomew Winery, located in one of Seattle's landmark buildings, the old Rainier Brewery. While at Gonzaga University, Bart was taking science courses with medical school in mind, but as with many future winemakers, life went in another direction. While Bart was working as a mortgage broker, a winemaker contacted him about a loan. Curious, Bart began asking him questions about making wine. Later, when an acquaintance asked if he had ever had a great wine, Bart’s answer of no led to visiting some area tasting rooms, and his mind, as Bart says, was blown. He could not believe the flavors coming out of the wines made in our state. His path was set, and in 2007 the winery had its first vintage. Because the climate in Eastern Washington allows almost any grape to ripen, Bart wanted to take advantage of that and make wines using classic varietals and those that are much less common. Primitivo, Carmenere, Tannat, and Aligote, are some of the grapes he uses in his lineup, achieving his goal of making the tasting experience at Bartholomew Winery a unique one.
